It’s not a secret, that the Sturgis Bike Rally is a must-see event if you’re traveling through the area in South Dakota. Huge choppers, Jack Daniels tasting, live music, cool mustaches; what's not to love?

We’ve broken down the ins and outs of this grand event and included some additional attractions for a complete trip to the Wild Wild West frontier. Take a look!

A lot of motorcycles are parked in a parking lot.

Origins of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

The rally was first started in 1938 by the Jackpine Gypsies, the town’s motorcycle group who bought and developed the hills and tracks where the rally would take place. During the 60s and 70s, the rally was an integral part of the rebel counterculture and the tough, biker culture we see today.

Since then, the rally has grown and exploded in charm and popularity, with modern-day events bringing in over 700,000 attendees. The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is the perfect blend of riders, bike enthusiasts, and visitors looking to appreciate the rugged side of Sturgis, SD.

The rally only continues to grow and, it is one of the largest and most famous motorcycle rallies in the world.

Specially-themed rides have long been a part of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Visitors can sign up for a themed ride to experience the Black Hill country in a unique way few others do. These special rides let you learn from riding pros and view South Dakota’s stunning scenery.

Here are a few of the best specially-themed rides you can experience and they just might inspire you to purchase a hog for yourself.

Ride with a Local

This is the perfect ride for first-timers and amateur bikers. Pair up with a local guide who’s been around the Black Hills for years and enjoy the beauty of the back roads. Your local guide will take care of every detail so you can sit back and relax. Plus, you’ll get the inside scoop about the best places to eat, drink, and unwind. When it’s over, you may just make a new friend.

The Mayor’s Ride

Hit the road and experience the beauty of Sturgis in the most epic way possible. The Mayor’s Ride has been a special event for 21 years. The mayor of Sturgis leads this ride, taking you past the picturesque landscape of the Black Hills and surrounding areas. Soak up the great outdoors and feel the rush of the wind on your face with the big boss of Sturgis.

Themed Rally Rides

Although this event is geared toward showing off some classic Harleys and enjoying the experience, it’s not all about motorcycles. The wide variety of events during the rally, truly makes it the perfect stop for everyone.

Mayor’s Pub Crawl

VIP treatment with a personal pub crawl led by the mayor. How cool is that? The mayor will take you on a tour of the best watering holes in town. And you’ll get a swag bag to commemorate the pub crawl.

Mayor’s Poker Tournament

If you fancy yourself a poker player, sign up for the Mayor’s Poker Tournament. The poker tournament has grown in popularity for both locals and rally-goers. It’s a charity event and a good chance to test composure and skill. The tournament takes place during the first week of the rally and is open to anyone.

Beard and Mustache Contest

Wizard beard or a few baby hairs; handlebar mustache or chevron; all types are welcome at the Beard and Mustache Contest, as long as they are natural. The event has different categories with winners from each competing for the People’s Choice Award. It’s a quirky celebration of hair grooming or non-grooming, in some cases.

Local Bites in Sturgis

As far as places to eat go, Sturgis is no slouch, with several local restaurants, delicatessens, and food trucks to satisfy anyone’s cravings. Food vendors dot the busy streets, serving up signature dishes with local and regional flavors.

Breweries & Wineries

When you’re feeling parched and need to sit down, Sturgis has its fair share of breweries, distilleries, and wineries for you to enjoy.

Knuckle Saloon: A long-time staple of the Sturgis scene, Knuckle Saloon is a brewery and a saloon resting on the property once owned by the town’s namesake, Colonel Samuel D. Sturgis. The Knuckle Saloon is also a museum, showcasing antiques and memorabilia that hearken back to the glory days. The saloon is often voted the best food in the Black Hills so you know you won’t be disappointed.

Belle Joli: Started by the Jackson family, the Belle Joli vineyard spreads across the Northern Black Hills into Sturgis. This local vineyard is founded on the belief that winemaking is deeply connected to the land.

The Jackson family saw the Black Hills’ rich soil as an ideal place to bring their dream to a reality. Stop by the vineyard for a tour, and enjoy the beautiful scenery while sampling some local wine.

When the bike rally comes to an end there is plenty to do in the Black Hills to extend the fun! Some of our favorites are the Badlands National Park and the Wind Cave National Park.

If you need to check something off your bucket list, the iconic Mount Rushmore is less than an hour's drive away. There are so many national parks and historical towns in our neck of the woods, that your trip will undoubtedly be packed with memories.
