Located 32 miles northwest of Custer, SD, this trailhead provides thrills to all ATV riders. Although this trail is a little further out, it can’t be missed! Weave in and out of the mountain trails as you see the beauty surrounding you. Convenience is key with this trail, as it provides a large parking lot for trucks and trailers. A trail permit is required to use this trail, so plan accordingly.

Ditch Creek Trailhead

Fifteen miles west of Hill City is Ditch Creek Trailhead. This trail provides beautiful overlook views and is one of the best places to stop in the Black Hills. Seeing as how it is not heavily traveled, your party should have no trouble making the journey up this moderately difficult trail.

Schroeder/Shanks Trailhead

Located in our area of Rapid City, the Schroeder/Shanks Trailhead additionally provides hiking and birding opportunities along your travels. Experience a variety of trail types, from wide to narrow. Be cautious of the exposed limestone that may cause difficulty in various sections.

Planning Your Trip

Now that you have seen some of our recommendations for ATV trails, we will cover some essential tips. These will ensure that you and your party are protected during your excursions.

  • Permits and Regulations: Make sure to check local permits and regulations before going on any trails as some trails require permits and you could face a fine if you don’t have one.
  • Weather Conditions: For your safety, we do not recommend taking an ATV during harsh weather, including rain. Check the forecast ahead of time and plan accordingly for whatever weather conditions you may face.
  • Safety First: Please wear safety gear, including helmets, gloves, and protective clothing, and practice safe driving guidelines.
  • Trail Maps: Obtain a trail map of the rides you are going on, or seek out a GPS. This will guarantee safety as well as make sure you stick to the designated paths. Don’t miss out on any worthwhile sights because you strayed from the path!
  • Respect Nature: Practice the ‘Leave No Trace’ policy when sticking to these trails. Clean up after yourselves and avoid damaging this beautiful landscape. Please respect any wildlife that you encounter as well.
