A Road Carved by History

The beloved highway was created by former South Dakota Governor Peter Norbeck, who famously made the Peter Norbeck National Scenic Byway on foot and horseback. Completed in 1922, the Needles Highway has enjoyed over 100 years of travelers from all around the world. Granite needles pierce the sky, offering a dramatic and unique landscape.

These sights served as the inspiration for the highway. Peter Norbeck and Scovel Johnson wanted a road that wouldn’t damage the land and animals around the Needles. In creating the scenic highway, they were able to provide the sights and sounds that the travelers were looking for.

What is There to See?

As you travel through Needles Highway, you will be engrossed in all that comes from the scenic tour. Below are some main highlights of the views that you will witness as you journey through the historic South Dakota highway.

There are three main tunnels along your party’s journey, and the Needles Eye Tunnel is the second of those tunnels. Regardless of the direction of travel, this tunnel provides an opportunity to drive through its skinny passages.

It is important to note that there are specific height and width requirements for your vehicle, to ensure that it can safely fit throughout the narrow space.

The rock tunnel formation is often referenced as a “Needle’s Eye” as it is shaped similarly to the eye of a needle. Other tunnels include Iron Creek Tunnel and Hood Tunnel, both of which offer a similar narrow driving experience.

Cathedral Spires

Along Needles Highway are rock formations that reach towards the sky, as if piercing the heavens. These Cathedral Spires formed more than two billion years ago, and have stood the test of time.

Made up of granite and metamorphic rocks, these spires are just waiting to be photographed by you and your party!

For hiking enthusiasts, the
Cathedral Spires Trail offers a short ¾ mile hike along the Custer State Park. Within this hike, your party can experience the spires up close and personal.

For additional information on what Custer State Park has to offer, we recommend viewing our Custer State Park Guide.

Animals

Bring your binoculars and see a variety of critters and creatures throughout your drive on Needles Highway. White-tailed or mule deer are the most common animals spotted, however, if you are lucky, you might just see the mountain goats that like to hang out near the rocks. Other travelers have stated that they’ve spotted bison, marmots, and osprey along the drive.

For bird watchers, bluebirds and red crossbills will light up the sky with various shades of blues and reds. Bald Eagles also occasionally graze past our beautiful highway.

Pigtail Bridges

Our final highlight will cover the “pigtail” bridges that can be found throughout the Needles Highway. These bridges wind around the landscape, providing travelers with an unforgettable roller coaster-like experience.

Not only are the bridges entertaining to drive on, but they are aesthetically pleasing. Drivers of all ages will love the winding bridges throughout the scenic highway, as it is sure to provide some thrills!

Tips for a Safe Trip

Drive Carefully

Please make sure to drive carefully and notice the sharp turns and tight tunnels that will present themselves. Be cautious of other drivers, especially oncoming traffic.

Drowsy drivers should plan on stopping ahead of time before making the trek.

Prepare for Weather

Weather can be unpredictable at times in South Dakota, with sudden rain showers and drops in temperature. Plan ahead by bringing weather-appropriate clothing.

Additionally, be prepared for differing driving conditions based on weather.

Check Your Vehicle

The road can be challenging, especially for larger vehicles, such as RVs. Make sure your car has regular maintenance checks and is suited for driving in the mountains.

If your car doesn’t drive well in various weather conditions, please keep that in mind before embarking on the scenic route.

Respect the Environment

Along your stops, please ensure the Leave No Trace principles are followed. Respect wildlife and dispose of trash properly, so we can keep our Needles Highway beautiful and protected for future generations to come.
